Yangon Joins World’s Top 10 Worst Cities List Along with Paris and Milan

Yangon, December (4)

The 2019 list of the world’s best and worst places for expats to live has been revealed recently, based on a new survey titled Expat City Ranking 2019. It is a third annual Expat City Ranking survey conducted by InterNations, a network and guide for expats around the globe.

The poll’s results come from the reactions of more than 20,000 expats worldwide.

The study looks at such factors as work life, the quality of urban living, and the local cost of living.

The results of the Expat City Ranking 2019 can be compared to the already-released listing on the 20 most dangerous places to live, also compiled by InterNations.

To one’s surprise, the United States share a notable number of three cities in the released list of the world’s top 10 worst places to live.

They are San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York City, coming in at 77, 76 and 74 rankings respectively in the bottom 10 of the survey on 82 cities worldwide.

- Finance and housing as well as the local cost of living are major pain points for expats there – revealed InterNations.

Top 10 Worst Cities to Live, with the Entrance of Yangon

As mentioned above, the experience and feelings of expats in 82 countries around the globe are surveyed to rank the worst and best world cities to live.

Kuwait City in Kuwait located at the tip of Persian Gulf ranks first in the list of top 10 worst cities to live. The study found that expats in Kuwait City dislike six-days weeks and long working hours. In addition, the expats acknowledge that the Kuwaiti attitude towards foreign workers, especially low paid workers, is poor.

An Indian expat remarks that Kuwaitis are not friendly.

Subsequent to Kuwait City, Rome and Milan from Italy enter the listing at 81st and 80th places.

Difficulty to find a job, expensive cost of living, low salaries, and imbalance between income and expenses are burdening factors for expats.

Following these three cities, Lagos from Nigeria, Paris from France, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City from the United States, and Lima, the capital and largest city of Peru, are ranked in succession in the list of worst cities to live.

Yangon, the former capital and current commercial centre of Myanmar, narrowly clutches the list of the top 10 worst cities to live coming in at 73 in the survey.

Yangon – the Worst City to Live in South-east Asia

Among the cities in South-east Asia, only Yangon joins the top 10 worst cities to live. Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City, and Singapore are among the top 5 best cities to live.

Low Quality of Urban Living

While expats in Yangon remark that the city’s locals are expat-friendly, and good and easy to work with, the low Quality of Urban Living Index puts it far behind other cities. A South Korean expat said that the healthcare system in Yangon is poor and he does not like it. In fact, more than half of the survey respondents are not happy with the healthcare system and local transport in Yangon. 31 per cent of the poll participants rate the local leisure options in Yangon negatively.
